Job Outlook 2008: Moderate

Even with decreased demand compared to past years, the computer industry still has significant demand for specialized skills.

Businesses want to be competitive and have constant access to information. Workers are needed to set up, maintain and support these systems. Global competition may limit some future growth. Outsourcing of routine tasks, like programming or support, may be a way for companies to lower costs.

Data security is another business priority, increased by numerous virus and worm attacks. The wireless Internet is also a growth area. People are using more wireless connections. Workers are needed to integrate businesses’ current systems with this new technology. Computer workers must have updated skills to be competitive.

Specialized certifications can help.
